International Education Week Set at Schreiner


Five days of cuisine, movies, music, sport and languages from around the world, plus presentations and discussions about studying , volunteering and working abroad, will be featured at Schreiner University as part of International Education Week, November 17â??21.

International Education Week is sponsored by SU’s Changing Global Society initiative, a program designed to help students develop an understanding of the customs in and relationships between societies and regions in the world. The events are open to the public and, with the exception of meals served in the dining hall, are free.

 
Monday there will be a discussion on teaching and graduate school abroad at 11:30 a.m. in the Cailloux Campus Activity Center (CCAC) Commons. An information session on spending a semester abroad will start at 6 p.m. in the CCAC Fishbowl. At 7 p.m. a discussion of Garbriel Marquez’s “One Hundred Years of Solitude” will be held in the Logan Library.
 
Tuesday’s activities will include an 11:30 a.m. talk in the CCAC Commons on study abroad opportunities. Reuben Summerlin, regional technical advisor in Fiji for the United Nations Capital Development Fund, will present a lecture on Global Microfinance at 3 p.m. in Cailloux Hall, room 311.
 
Wednesday’s events will feature an “Ask a Muslim” Q&A in the Campus Ministry House at noon (refreshments served). The Japanese animated science fiction movie “Summer Wars” (2009) will be shown at 7 p.m. in the CCAC River Room.
 
A two-hour celebration of global music and languages will start at 11:30 a.m. Thursday in the CCAC Commons.  That evening, representatives from the Peace Corps will speak with students and answer questions from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Duggar Room at Faulkner Hall. Free pizza will be served.
 
If you’ve ever wanted to try your hand at cricket, the de facto national pastime of England, a game will be held at 1 p.m. Friday on the field adjacent to the CCAC.  Friday evening the 2006 French anthology film “Paris, je t’aime” will be shown at 7 p.m. in the CCAC Theatre.

International menus scheduled during the week in the Schreiner dining hall include: Monday lunch—Colombia; Tuesday lunch—Italy; Wednesday lunch—Korea; Thursday dinner—Jordan; and Friday dinner—France. Meal prices for the public are $8.25 for lunch and $8.75 for dinner. The dining hall is open until 8 p.m. weekdays.
