Ray Wylie Hubbard at Texas Writers Conference
Iconoclastic songwriter Ray Wylie Hubbard will read and perform at the annual Texas Writers Conference at Schreiner University on Tuesday, April 12th.
The event, which starts at 7pm in the Floyd and Kathleen Cailloux Campus Activity Center Ballroom, is free and open to the public.
Hubbard spent the better part of two years sifting through his memories and hashing them out on paper, before publishing the autobiography last fall.
A review by The Daily Country website says of the book, "With this guitar, Hubbard is not only musician, but poet and storyteller...something that translates extremely well here.  the same intimacy and integrity that is present at his live shows emanates from the pages, and will have you feeling as if he is talking to you face to face.  He is witty, incredibly dry and naturally funny so be prepared--there are copious one-liners and many, many occasions when you will literally burst out laughing."
Dr. Kathleen Hudson, professor of English and director/founder of the Texas Heritage Music Foundation, is using the autobiography in her freshman writing class.  At the conference, students will present some of their reactions to the book, then Hubbard will read selections and perform some of his music.
Hubbard has visited the Schreiner campus repeatedly over the years, to speak with student and perform at the Texas Music Coffeehouse, which is co-sponsored by the English department and the THMF.
He is perhaps best known for his song, "Up Against the Wall, Redneck Mother," which became on of the defining anthems of progressive country music after Jerry Jeff Walker recorded it on his classic 1973 album Viva Terlingua!  His prolific recording career runs from the 1976 album Ray Wylie Hubbard and the Cowboy Twinkies to his most recent, The Ruffian's Misfortune in 2015.
The Texas Writers Conference is sponsored by the Schreiner University English Department.  For more information email Dr. Hudson at khudson@schreiner.edu or phone 830-792-7413
