Parasite Research Subject of Crate Lecture

Research molecular biologist Dr. Pia Untalan Olafson, Ph.D., will be guest speaker for the next Harry Crate Lecture at Schreiner University on Thursday, April 14.

The lecture, which is free and open to the public, starts at 6:30 p.m. in Room 106 of the Moody Science Building on campus.

Olafson works at the U.S. Department of Agriculture Knipling-Bushland US Livestock Insects Research Laboratory in Kerrville, where her exploration centers on livestock ectoparasites, such as blood-feeding flies and ticks. Through a better understanding of the parasites’ chemosensory systems and insect-microbe interactions, she and other researchers are designing technologies to control the pests.

Her current work at the lab also includes co-directing the genome sequencing project for the stable fly, a livestock pest that causes significant economic losses for U.S. cattle producers.

A native of Guam, Olafson holds graduate and undergraduate degrees from the University of Hawaii.

The Harry Crate Lecture series is named in memory of Harry Crate, a former math and engineering professor at Schreiner who loved discussing science and technology with students and faculty. Previous presenters have included former students, medical professionals, scientists and Nobel laureates.
