Writing Workshop at Unity of the Hill Country, July 19 & 26
Many of us intend to sit down someday and write stories about our early lives and those of our ancestors, but never seem to find time to do so.  The upcoming workshop at Unity of the Hill Country is designed to help begin that project.  Stories about our own lives in earlier times will be lost , as well as the stories we have heard from ancestors, if we don't write about them.
Possible topics might include what life was like during World War II in the 1940's or the Cuban Missile Crisis in the 1960s.  For younger people, what was it like to attend high school in the 1990s?  What was it like being a military brat and moving numerous times? Or, the subject could be about a humorous event in the past.  The choice of subjects is endless.
The workshop will be held on two consecutive Saturday afternoons, July 19 and July 26 from 2 to 5 pm at the Unity Church of the Hill Country, 1016 Jefferson St., Kerrville, and is open to the entire community.  During this class, participants will write a story about a person and also about an event.
Instructor for this workshop will be Sandra Lane, who has a B.S. degree in Journalism from the University of North Texas.  She has been a writer for many years, writing for newspapers, trade journals, and corporate communications.  She has held similar workshops in the Dallas/Fort Worth area and also for the Fredericksburg Historical Society.
Some of her family members Sandra has written about include her great-uncle, who was a veteran of the Spanish-American War, and wrote poetry.  Another story is about her mother's father who came to Texas in a covered wagon in 1880 with his parents, three brothers, and a baby.  When they were about miles south of where Dallas is now located, they were caught in a blizzard and the parents and baby froze to death.  Sandra's grandfather who was eight years old, and three brothers survived.  In a lighter vein, Sandra has also written a humorous story about the social mores of the 1950s.
Participants in the writing workshop will also share some of their stories.  There is a $25 fee for the two sessions, which will benefit the church.  Refreshments will be served.  Reservations can be made by calling the church office at 830-896-7575.
If there is sufficient interest, there may be a presentation at a later date where participants can read some of their completed stories.
